Technical Support - Mac OS 8.x Networking
Macintosh OS 8.x contains its own TCP/IP stack and dialer, so there is no need to install additional software to establish a connection with the Internet (although Internet browser is still required). However, you do need to configure the networking components of the operating system. These instructions provide all the information you need to set up your Macintosh to access the Internet.

The first step in configuring your Macintosh to connect to the Internet is to configure the PPP protocol. Go to the Apple Menu, down to Control Panels and select PPP.

This will bring up a new window titled PPP.

Type in your username (consisting of all lowercase letters with no spaces) in the field labled Name and your password in the field labled Password. Check the Save password box if you do not want to have to type in your password every time that you log on. Type in your local access number in the field labeled Number (for a list of access numbers click here).

Next go to the menu bar and from the PPP menu select Modem.

The following window will appear.

In this window you will first want to set Connect via to Modem Port. Select your modem model from the Modem dropdown list. The Sound option enables you to hear the modem dial and connect, it can be set to either on or off. The Dialing option sets the dialer to either tone or pulse. Most POTS phone lines are now touch tone but if you are uncertain contact your local phone company and ask them. The Ignore dial tone box should not be checked. Click the exit box in the upper left hand corner and when you are prompted to Save changes select Save.

Now go back to the menu bar and from the PPP menu select TCP/IP.

The following window will appear.

In this window you need to set Connect via to PPP and Configure to Using PPP Server (IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router Address should all display < will be supplied by server >). For Name server addr. type in 63.238.218.2 twice and then 63.238.218.3. Next, infinitecom.com should be put in the box under Search domains. Click the exit box in the upper left hand corner and when you are prompted to Save changes select Save.

Now that your networking is set up you should be ready to use the Internet. Simply launch your Internet browser and you are on your way.
